Live online concert to feature mosaic of melodies from around the world

Common Ground: A Community Mosaic – Musical Mosaic Edition – September 24
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The New Bedford Whaling Museum is partnering with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra to present “Common Ground: A Musical Mosaic Edition” as a live online concert on September 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This musical experience is part of the Whaling Museum’s story-collecting initiative in Greater New Bedford called “Common Ground: A Community Mosaic.” The event will feature a rich mosaic of melodies from different cultures around the world. Music from Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Israel, and China, will trace the many paths immigrants have taken to arrive in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Tickets to attend the concert online are $10 for Whaling Museum members and $15 for non-members. Details and ticket information are available at www.whalingmuseum.org.
A solo violin piece based on a Chinese folk melody and written by local Chinese-American composer Dr. Jing Wang will be one highlight of the evening. Dance legend Kevin Doyle will join the musicians, adding his lively step-dancing and clogging to Irish jigs, hornpipes, waltzes, and reels.
Commenting on behalf of NBSO, violinist EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks said, “For this Common Ground Musical Mosaic performance, we’re diving deeper into New Bedford’s history using the Whaling Museum’s resources, so we can connect to music that represents the rich cultural heritage of the city.” Holmes-Hicks will be joined by Peter Zay, also representing NBSO, on cello and guitar.
The Whaling Museum is calling on members of the Greater New Bedford community to contribute stories about their lives, family histories, neighborhoods, and more for Common Ground: A Community Mosaic.
