Youth Voices for the Ocean exhibition raises ocean conservation awareness

Whaling Museum hosts student artwork from around the world
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — An exhibition at the New Bedford Whaling Museum features artwork by the student winners of the international Ocean Awareness Contest run by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit. Bow Seat works to engage young people in ocean conservation and advocacy through the arts. Youth Voices for the Ocean is on display in the Whaling Museum’s Upper Level Rotating Galleries now through September 7, 2020. For more information, visit www.whalingmuseum.org. Since 2012, Bow Seat’s annual contest has invited young people around the world to creatively explore critical conservation issues in ocean health—including plastic pollution, fossil fuel extraction, biodiversity loss, and climate change—with a focus on humans’ roles as both problem-makers and solvers. More than 13,000 students from 106 countries and all 50 U.S. states have responded through visual art, writing, film, and music. Youth Voices for the Ocean features a selection of those works, which expose what is happening to our oceans; reflect on what it means to be a human in the 21st century; discover and advocate for solutions on personal and planetary scales; and inspire a culture of respect and action for all life on this blue planet.
The exhibition is supported in part by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, through its Cultural Investment Portfolio Projects Program, as well as the Island Foundation.
Bow Seat’s 2020 Ocean Awareness Contest is accepting submissions from students worldwide aged 11-18 until June 15, 2020. Special scholarship awards are available for Massachusetts students and residents of the South Coast, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Awards are also available for classroom teachers, informal educators, and youth program coordinators who use the Ocean Awareness Contest as a teaching tool. About the New Bedford Whaling Museum
The New Bedford Whaling Museum ignites learning through explorations of art, history, science and culture rooted in the stories of people, the region and an international seaport.
