First Friday | Whispers in Seaweed, Now & Soon & Somehow Forever
Friday, July 7, 2023 from 6:00 to 9:00PM
Join us for the next First Friday, on Friday, July 7, for an after-hours immersive evening of spoken word within our latest exhibitions “A singularly marine & fabulous produce: the Cultures of Seaweed” (Wattles Gallery) and “Now and Soon & Somehow Forever” (Center Street Gallery). Poetry in art and art in poetry!
The program includes a brief beginner-friendly poetry workshop, led by New Bedford’s own Poet Laureate, Sarah Jane Mulvey, for those who feel inspired by the art and artists.
After the planned program, enjoy lite bites and libations in the Jacobs Family Gallery, and explore the rest of the exhibition spaces with the rhythms of calypso music in background.
Sarah Jane Mulvey is a poet and non-profit professional. She is a co-founder of Anomaly Poetry and hosts monthly open mic nights. She is an editor and contributor to Anomaly’s yearly anthologies - Rituals and Tidings, now in their fifth year of publication. Sarah will be joined by a few other poets, including:
Kayla Conchina-Conner, a poet and artist born and raised in New Bedford, MA. Her poetry and artwork has been published in Anomaly Poetry and Domesticated Primate's anthologies, Rituals and Tidings, and has hung artwork with Gallery X and Winston Gallery.
Paul Cordeiro, a poet and editor living in Dartmouth, MA. He has two haiku & tanka booklets (Bare Earth 2013, Wild Violets 2021) archived at The Haiku Foundation Digital Library. He was a founding member of the New Bedford Poetry Society, and editor of the Union & Sixth anthologies.
Maia "Maize" Livramento, a spoken word and mixed media artist from New Bedford. She is a Team Leader for the non-profit organization 3rd Eye Unlimited. She is a seasoned performer of spoken word, and most recently won 1st place in the 2023 Juneteenth Virtual Poetry Slam.
The first spoken word set starts promptly at 6:00pm in Wattles Gallery, followed by the poetry workshop. The second set will start at 7:00pm in the Center Street Gallery. The museum will be open until 9:00pm.
Museum admission for this special program is $10 for members | $20 for non-members.
