Step into a night overflowing with dynamic rhythm and soul as the KabuJazz Ensemble brings their unique fusion of Cape Verdean tradition and American jazz to the Whaling Museum. Spearheaded by the magnetic Candida Rose Baptista, whose contralto voice weaves the warmth of morna, the pulse of batuku, and the spirited flair of jazz, this is a performance that resonates with both the heart and the heritage.
Under the masterful musical direction of J. L. Santos Spencer, a Cape Verdean guitarist raised on the musical traditions of São Vicente and Sal, you’ll hear his signature blend of flamenco, African and jazz flavors, anchored deeply in Cape Verde’s cultural DNA.
They’re joined by a stellar ensemble:
- Heribar Estrela on keyboards and backing vocals, who brings jazz, neo-soul, and MPB influences from his training in Portugal.
- Tchico Évora, whose percussion roots in Brava and early rhythm-making shine through in every beat.
- Emmanuel “Manny” Escobar, versatile on bass and saxophone, grounding the music in jazz, R&B, and Afro-Latin traditions with connections to Berklee and performances with legends like Esperanza Spalding and Wynton Marsalis.
Together, this ensemble invites you on a musical voyage—from the soulful sway of Cape Verde's rhythms to the improvisational vibrancy of jazz. It's a kaleidoscope of sound that moves bodies, warms spirits, and bridges cultures.
Why You Can’t Miss This
- Authentic Fusion: Experience the seamless melding of morna, batuku, jazz, R&B, and gospel—vividly brought to life through Candida Rose’s expressive vocals and the ensemble’s richly textured arrangements.
- Artistic Mastery: Each member brings a deep lineage of Cape Verdean and jazz expertise, from Spencer’s family-based guitar heritage to Escobar’s academic and performance pedigree.
- Cultural Resonance: This isn’t just a concert—it’s an immersive cultural experience, spotlighting the musical dialogue between Cape Verde and the U.S. that Candida Rose has researched, performed, and taught across New England.
Special Note: This event also commemorates the 50th anniversary of Cape Verdean independence, honoring the resilience, culture, and enduring spirit of the Cape Verdean community.
