Visitors joined us this February school vacation week to get expressive during the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s ART WEEK!

Art Workshops
Middle and high school students were invited to explore the Museum’s extensive art collection and create their own works of art in a series of hands-on workshops. Workshops were FREE, but registration was required.

Artmaking
Throughout the week, visitors of all ages explored a variety of art forms at Art Stations in the Museum’s Jacobs Family Gallery. Artmaking activities were completely free and open to the public!

Schedule of Activities

Art Workshops for middle and high schoolers

Registration required for all workshops.

MONDAY
10 am – 12 pm OR 1 pm – 3 pm
Lighting the Way Hands-On Art Workshop
With arts educator Tobey Eugenio
Create your own artwork celebrating women’s history and the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. You can even enter your artwork into IGNITE: A Youth Showcase of Art Inspired by Historic Women of the SouthCoast, to be held on March 12. (Submission deadline February 26.) IGNITE is presented in partnership with the YWCA and is supported by Mass Humanities through a grant made possible by Mass Cultural Council.

Conservation Jewelry
With jewelry maker Louisa Medeiros
Learn about the importance of whale conservation and ocean health while making your own bracelet from recycled materials. Easy and fun!

THURSDAY
10 am – 11:30 am OR 1 pm – 2:30 pm
Drawing Skeletons
With artist Brandon Strathmann, Lesley University
Progressing from simple shapes and lines to realistic contour drawing methods, learn to draw the giant whale bones on display in the Whaling Museum.

FRIDAY
10:30 am – 12 pm OR 1 pm – 2:30 pm
Ship Building 101
With Merchant Navy Captain (retired) Michael Taylor
Explore the Lagoda, the world’s largest ship model, and the science behind why ships float, then create your own ship model.

Free for Whaling Museum members and with regular paid admission.
During the week, visitors could climb inside a life-size inflatable humpback whale to learn about whale anatomy; go “All Aboard the Lagoda,” to travel the seas, interact with new cultures, learn the ropes of a whaleship, and go a-whaling; or take a Highlights Tour.
