AHA! Night: NB Cultures | Tied in Tradition
Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
For September’s NB Cultures AHA! Night, the New Bedford Whaling Museum presents the opening of the International Guild of Knot Tyers Exposition, a three-day gathering that begins Thursday and extends into the evening.
This special program celebrates New Bedford’s deep maritime traditions while spotlighting the artistry of knot-tying practices from around the world. Guests will see demonstrations by international knot-tying experts alongside displays from local exhibitors, drawing connections between global craftsmanship and our own rich seafaring heritage.
From intricate decorative knots to traditional maritime techniques, visitors can explore the cultural artistry woven into this centuries-old practice—and discover how it continues to tie communities together today.
Harbor View Gallery – All knot-tying activities will take place here. In addition, select galleries of the Museum will be open free of charge for visitors during AHA! Night.
Museum Store – Be sure to stop by the Museum Store, where you’ll find knot-tying books, ropework items, and more inspired by maritime craft traditions.
