“Embodying Material” by Julia Mandle

Artist Julia Mandle shared with museum visitors her unique perspective about making conceptual art. Over the past decade, Mandle has worked with materials ranging from sugar to ceramic, from chalk to bronze, from fabric to performance. One of her ceramic works, Tied on the Bight,  is included in the Museum’s permanent collections and is currently on exhibit in Thou Shalt Knot: Clifford W. Ashley. Mandle discussed how her choice of material is closely linked with her personal artistic expression. She consistently strives to show traces of people’s presence in the world, often those marginalized and without a public voice.
