Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
Saturday, September 21
9 am – 5 pm
Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. The Museum Day ticket provides free admission for two people on Saturday, September 21, 2019.
Enjoy music in our galleries throughout the day performed by members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and inspired by our exhibitions (see music schedule below). These performances are funded by the Creative Commonwealth Initiative of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.
See our newest exhibition, De Wind is Op! Climate, Culture and Innovation in Dutch Maritime Painting, featuring treasures from the Whaling Museum’s incredible collection of Dutch and Flemish Golden Age art. Dive deep into the world of Whales Today to explore whale biology, behavior, and conservation efforts. In the Bourne Building, stand on the bow of the world’s largest model whaleship, the Lagoda, and watch America’s longest painting scroll by in a life-sized digital format projected in a full theatrical setting. A Spectacle in Motion lets you experience what Benjamin Russell and other whalers saw as they left the port of New Bedford to travel the sea in search of whales. The 1848 Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World is longer than the Empire State Building is tall! There is more – much more – to see and do at the Whaling Museum on September 21st!
