Free and open to the public
By Louis and Bonnie Silverstein
In the mid-1800’s crewmen serving duty on lightships off the coast of Nantucket created Nantucket Lightship Baskets as a way to pass the time at sea. Today, these baskets represent a proud American tradition that is recognized throughout the world and can be passed down from generation to generation. Experienced weavers, Lou and Bonnie Silverstein, demonstrated the time-honored practice for Museum visitors on July 11 from 10 am – 2 pm. Bonnie and Lou highlighted several distinctive features that characterize the Nantucket Basket’s labor-intensive construction.
