New Bedford Day of Portugal

Day of Portugal Parade

June 8-11, 2017

The Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities is celebrated on June 10th, a national holiday in Portugal. It honors the Portuguese nation, the Portuguese communities around the world and the Portuguese language and culture through the great poet Luis Vaz de Camões (who died in June, 10th, 1580).

The history of the Portuguese in Massachusetts and especially New Bedford, makes up an integral part of the history of this State. Today, New Bedford has the largest percentage of Portuguese population in the United States—more than 59% of the population of New Bedford claims Portuguese ancestry.

This festival is for everyone. It is about sharing our language and culture through various artisan craft displays directly from Portugal, traditional and modern music from all parts of Portugal, traditional Portuguese cuisine, educational demonstrations and literature, games and many other venues.

Also included as part of the New Bedford Day of Portugal is a Golf Tournament, Soccer Tournament and 5k Road Race. In addition to these events, numerous grants to local charities and scholarships are awarded to deserving students wishing to pursue a college degree.

This year we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Day of Portugal Camdes and the Portuguese Communities in the City of New Bedford.

The three day event will commemorate New Bedford’s vast cultural ties with Portugal and the Portuguese speaking communities throughout the world.

Day of Portugal festivities features ethnic food and refreshments, Portuguese, Cape Verdean a Brazilian Music, folkloric groups, Golf Tournament, 5K Road Race.
