Re/Framing the View: Nineteenth Century American Landscapes

The Slocum’s River Reserve Guided Walk

Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust

Similar to other coastal New England villages situated at tidal fall lines, the Slocum’s River and Russell’s Mills area of Dartmouth was a center of colonial trade and small-scale industry, as well as a hub for Native American life. Today, due in part to extensive land protection efforts, this area features many elements of a 20th Century rural landscape. The Slocum’s River Reserve, which protects more than 3,000 feet of frontage along the Slocum’s River, includes mature woodlands, agricultural fields, and pastures that slope down to the western bank of the Slocum’s River. The Reserve has 2 miles of walking trails and is jointly owned and managed by the Trustees of Reservations and Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. This guided walk will inform visitors about how the contemporary landscape of this area links historical land uses with concerns for the future such as sea level rise due to climate change. The tour route will include unpaved trails of easy to moderate terrain. This walk may not be accessible to visitors in wheelchairs or with similar mobility needs.

Trailhead is located between Horseneck Road and Slocum’s River, 1.4 miles south of Russell’s Mills Village.

Parking is available in the Reserve parking lot or across Horseneck Road in the Sylvan Nursery lot. Please do not block any door/entryways of the Sylvan barn.

This program is being offered rain or shine. In the event of wet weather, wear protective clothing and good boots. In the case of dangerous conditions, we will notify participants of a cancellation 24-hours prior.

This program is being offered as a partnership between the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust and the New Bedford Whaling Museum in concert with the rotating exhibition Re/Framing the View: Nineteenth-Century American Landscapes.
