Learn more about Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day.

Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. The Museum Day ticket provided free admission for two people on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Visitors enjoyed music in our galleries throughout the day performed by members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and inspired by our exhibitions (see music schedule below). These performances were funded by the Creative Commonwealth Initiative of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Highlighted Exhibitions: A new exhibition, De Wind is Op! Climate, Culture and Innovation in Dutch Maritime Painting, features treasures from the Whaling Museum’s incredible collection of Dutch and Flemish Golden Age art. Whales Today explores whale biology, behavior, and conservation efforts. A Spectacle in Motion lets you experience what Benjamin Russell and other whalers saw as they left the port of New Bedford to travel the sea in search of whales. The 1848 Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World is longer than the Empire State Building is tall!

» Performance on Museum’s Plaza/Jacobs Family Gallery is FREE for everyone.
» Performances in other galleries are FREE with Museum admission or with Smithsonian Museum Day ticket.
