Join the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture in welcoming Ricardo Serrão Santos, the Portuguese Minister of Maritime Affairs and distinguished scholar of marine science.

A Principal Researcher at the University of the Azores, Pro-Rector of the University of the Azores, and President of Institute of Marine Research (IMAR), Minister Santos has dedicated his scientific career to the study of marine biodiversity and ocean ecosystems. He has served Portugal in his current role as Minister of Maritime Affairs since October 2019. Introducing Minister Santos will be Brian Rothschild, PhD., Montgomery Charter Professor of Marine Science and former Dean of the School for Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Ricardo Serrão Santos holds a Doctorate in Biology and Animal Ecology. He is Principal Researcher at the University of the Azores, Pro-Rector of the University of the Azores and President of IMAR - Institute of Marine Research. Minister Santos was Director of the Department Oceanography and Fisheries of University of Azores.

Minister Santos is dedicated to the study of marine biodiversity and ocean ecosystems, and has published more than 400 hundred scholarly works. He is co-editor of the book "Seamounts: Ecology, Fisheries and Conservation," and co-author of a Virtual Centre of Marine Interpretation (CIMV).

During his academic career, Dr. Santos coordinated and chaired several scientific organizations of the EU, Portugal and the Azores. He holds positions with several scientific advisory bodies and committees, among which is the Oceanographic Institute of Paris. He is Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science/ Deep-Sea Environments and Ecology.

Ricardo Serrão Santos is member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences and Emeritus Member of the Portuguese Navy Academy.

He has received several honorable mentions and awards, among which was a “Gift to the Earth” by WWF in 2002, the "Insígnia Autonómica de Reconhecimento," awarded by the Legislative Parliament of the Azores in 2012. He was commended "Chevalier de l'Ordre de Saint Charles" by SAS Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2013, and awarded the Prize "Excellence Mare" by PwC Portugal in 2017.

He was also Member of the European Parliament between 2014 and 2019.

Ricardo Serrão Santos lives in the Portuguese Autonomous Region of Azores.
