Maritime Weekend highlights history, lore, and beauty of maritime art and antiques

May 15–May 17 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The unique history, fascinating lore, and intricate beauty of maritime art and artifacts will be highlighted during Maritime Weekend at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, May 15-May 17, 2020. Enthusiasts, aficionados, and armchair historians will gather from around the world for a weekend full of discovery and appreciation. Experts will present exciting research and share remarkable collections of maritime art, antiques, and scrimshaw – the indigenous shipboard art of whalers during the “Age of Sail.” Advance registration is required for Maritime Weekend. The Maritime Weekend schedule boasts a wide spectrum of world-class collections, fine food, new ideas, and high camaraderie. The weekend kicks off with a reception and talk on Friday evening. Saturday includes a full day of interesting lectures and presentations (lunch provided), followed by a cocktail reception and dinner. Sunday will close out the weekend’s activities with a half day of programs sure to leave participants curious and eager to continue their own journey of collecting and learning.

Presentation topics will include: Collecting Marine Antiques; The Old Curiosity Shops; New Revelations about Scrimshaw; Wooden Ship-Carvings; Fundamentals of Marine Painting: Reflections of an Eccentric Curator; Navigation: A Hands-on History of Nautical Instruments; The Pacific Tortoise Shell Trade; Scrimshaw Tools; Whalemen’s Paintings and Scrimshaw of the Mission San Carlos Borroméo; Preview of the Scrimshaw Exhibition at the Cahoon Museum (Cotuit, Cape Cod); and a curator-led tour of the New Bedford Whaling Museum Scrimshaw Gallery. Speakers and topics are subject to change.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum ignites learning through explorations of art, history, science and culture rooted in the stories of people, the region and an international seaport.
