The exhibition will contain works of Domingos Rebêlo from many private collections and institutions throughout mainland Portugal and the Azores. In a career spanning more than 60 years, the art of Domingos Rebêlo reflects Portuguese identity and culture and honors the artist’s Azorean roots. He dreamed of exhibiting his work for Portuguese emigrants and others in Massachusetts. After over 20  years of work and research, his grandson Jorge Rebêlo has located much of his grandfather’s immense body of work, dispersed among more than sixty institutions in continental Portugal, the Azores and abroad. His body of work includes oil on canvas, engravings, sketches and sculpture. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is proud to honor this seminal Portuguese artist and his legacy in a landmark exhibition opening December, 2021.
