Setting Sail
Batten down the hatches and trim the sail – there is a storm ahead!
Raising and lowering sails were important jobs on the ship. It required a lot of crew, courage and know-how. A bark has three masts and whalers needed to know the names of all the sails and where the halyards and sheets were located to raise and lower the sails.
Keep an Even Keel
As the ship changed direction, or the wind shifted direction, crew adjusted sails to maintain optimal speed. This was no easy task. Good luck, sailor!
