The Beetle Whaleboat Project: The Charles W. Morgan moved to Mystic in 1941 and was hauled out in 2008 for restoration. She will re-launch in 2013 and visit ports in New England in 2014. Mystic Seaport has agreed to let us construct one of her 7 whaleboats. When the Morgan sails through the hurricane barrier, an exact replica of an original New Bedford-built Beetle whaleboat will swing from her davits. |

Azorean Whaleboat Model: Beginning in the mid-19th century, Azoreans adopted and adapted Yankee whaling techniques for their own use. Azorean whaleboat design continued virtually unchanged until the decline of the whaling industry in the islands in the 1980s. As part of updates to the Azorean Whaleman Gallery, we have commissioned João Tavares, a master Boatwright from Pico, Azores, to build a model of an Azorean whaleboat. This model will be displayed in the Azorean Whaleman Gallery near the Lagoda and her Yankee whaleboats. (link to this page to come) |
