NINE NEW TRUSTEES ELECTED TO THE
OLD DARTMOUTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
(NEW BEDFORD, MA) – Nine new trustees were elected to the Board of Trustees of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society - New Bedford Whaling Museum during its 107th Annual Meeting on May 28, 2010. Candida Rose Baptista, Charles E. Bascom, Thomas G. Davis, William do Carmo, Roy Enoksen, Keith Kauppila, David N. Kelley II, George B. Mock III, and Dawn Blake Souza will serve as trustee members for the 2010-2013 term.
CANDIDA ROSE BAPTISTA
Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Candida Rose Baptista is a professional vocal performer, music/choir director, arranger, composer, songwriter and music producer. After a 20 year career in banking as an International Trade Specialist, she returned to school to pursue her musical interests. She graduated summa cum laude from UMass-Dartmouth, with a Bachelor of Arts/Music degree. She represented the New Bedford ECHO Project for three years in the ECHO Performing Arts Festival. She has received awards from the New Bedford Branch NAACP, the Rhode Island Educational Enrichment Program, the Martha Briggs Educational Club, and the New Bedford City Council.
CHARLES E. BASCOM
Charles E. Bascom of Marion is a graduate of Boston University and Columbia Graduate School of Business. He is President of Watch Captain LLC, a marine software company. Previously he was President of Quadrant Corporation, a provider of software products for financial institutions. He currently serves as Treasurer at the Brooks School and as Board member for the Marion-Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race. He served for 7 years on the Board of the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum, 4 of which were as President.
THOMAS G. DAVIS
Thomas G. Davis of Dartmouth graduated from the University of Michigan, received an MBA from Northwestern University and did post graduate studies at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and the Brookings Institute. A former Senior Executive with Exxon Corporation, he is currently the Executive Director of the Greater New Bedford Industrial Foundation. He is also active in the SouthCoast Development Partnership, Global Learning Charter School, SouthCoast Educational Improvement Foundation, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Charlton School of Business, SRPEDD, Mass Inc. and the John Adams Innovation Institute.
WILLIAM DO CARMO
William do Carmo of New Bedford is a graduate of Roger Williams University, UMass-Boston, and Fitchburg State College, with post-graduate study at Cambridge College. An architect and engineer, he has worked with HUD, Massachusetts Housing Finance, Massachusetts Office for Civil Rights, and the New Bedford Redevelopment Authority. He is active in the New Bedford Election Commission, New Bedford Human Relations Commission, and the Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship Society. Community activities include being past president of the NAACP, Red Cross, New Bedford Airport Commission, and the New Bedford Port Society. In his leisure time, Bill is an active pilot and an avid sailor.
ROY ENOKSEN
Roy Enoksen of Mattapoisett, a graduate of Bryant College, is the founder and CEO of Eastern Fisheries, Inc. He received the Governor's Inner City Investment Award from Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Roy is a member of the Board of Managers of the New Bedford Port Society, and a member of the New Bedford Industrial Foundation. He is a past advisor to the New England Fisheries Management Council and past member of the Board of Directors of the New Bedford YMCA. He is involved in fisheries issues for New England, is active in New Bedford Child and Family Service and is a supporter of other various organizations.
KEITH KAUPPILA
Keith Kauppila of Boston & Dartmouth is an attorney-at-law and developer. He has a deep interest in the visual and decorative arts and has been active on the Museum's Collections Committee, most recently helping update the Collection policy. Living in Boston and South Dartmouth, he serves on the Board of Governors at the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy, has been a long standing member the New Bedford Whaling Museum Leadership Council and is a member of the New Bedford Yacht Club.
DAVID N. KELLEY II
David N. Kelley II of Marion graduated from Tabor Academy and Southeastern Massachusetts University. He owned and operated D. N. Kelley & Son Shipyard and Kelley Dock and Marine for over forty years. He was the fifth generation to operate the companies founded in 1864. A boater his entire life, he is a member of the New York Yacht Club. He was a National Director of the American Boat and Repairers Association for many years. David is a Board member of the Port Society and a former member of the New Bedford Industrial Foundation. He was one of the waterfront fundraisers for the St. Luke's Hospital Capital Drive in 2005. David has been a Bank Director for many years and is currently on the Board of Bank of Fall River, and a long time supporter of the Coalition of Buzzards Bay. David is an avid golfer and a member of the Bay Club of Mattapoisett.
GEORGE B. MOCK III
George B. Mock III of Mattapoisett is a graduate of Princeton and the Sloan School of Management at MIT. He is CEO of Nye Lubricants, Inc., beginning work there in 1986. He serves as a Trustee for the Cannonville Beach Association and the Mattapoisett Casino, and formerly served as a Trustee for the Lloyd Center for Environmental Studies, Sippican Tennis Club, and Tabor Academy. George's family has a long history of service to the Whaling Museum, as a second generation Trustee.
DAWN BLAKE SOUZA
Dawn Blake Souza of New Bedford is a graduate of UMass-Amherst and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with additional post-graduate studies in Arizona. She has 27 years in the field of public education, as an elementary, secondary, and adult education classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, teacher mentor/trainer, researcher, and consultant. She was Principal at Campbell Elementary School from 2002-2005. She is an author, and translator, fluent in Spanish. Formerly a member of the Board of the New Bedford Women's Center, she volunteers for Our Sisters' School, Cape Verdean American Veterans Association, New Bedford Historical Society, and church activities.
Officers of the Board of Trustees include: John N. Garfield, Jr., Chair; Lucile P. Hicks, First Vice Chair; Gurdon B. Wattles, Second Vice Chair; Joseph E. McDonough, Treasurer; Elizabeth Huidekoper, Assistant Treasurer; and Llewellyn Howland III, Clerk.
