Missouri
never figured directly in the
history of American whaling, but
whale products provided the raw
materials for a variety of manufactures,
from carriage springs and buggy
whips to machine oil and preparations
to treat leather.
The importance of whale oils
and greases only increased with
the growth of the St. Louis
shoe industry in the early part
of the 20th century.
It may also interest fellow-citizens
of the Show-Me State that one
of America's most eminent collectors
and historians of whalers' scrimshaw
is a resident of Kansas City.
