Arizona's
little-known whaling heritage includes
Robert H. Paul (1830-1901), a native of
Worcester, Massachusetts, who went out
prospecting in the California Gold Rush,
and became one of the Old West's leading
peace officers.
His
career intertwined with those of Wyatt
Earp -- whom he tries to arrest at one
point -- Curly Bob Brocius, and other
Southwest notables, and he served with
distinction as Sheriff of Tombstone
and U.S. Marshal of the Arizona Territory
in the 1880s and '90s.
His
photo and a 1849-model Colt .31-calibre
pocket revolver can be seen in the exhibition
vignette dedicated to his memory in
"Famous Whalemen: A Baker's Dozen."
