SCRIMSHAW
Sea-elephant tooth stipple-engraved by Cape Verdean whaleman João da Lomba aboard the New Bedford brig Daisy in 1906. Lomba was regarded as an expert in the Antarctic sea-elephant hunt, a seasonal adjunct of many whaling voyages in that era. In 1913, naturalist and shipmate Robert Cushman Murphy called Lomba “a Homeric hero among whalemen.”
