MENDING SAILS
Whalemen not only provided labor for weighing anchor, setting sail, and pursuing whales, but like seamen everywhere, were responsible for loading cargo and day-to-day maintenance of ship and gear. Captain Antone T. Edwards and crew of the bark Wanderer, the last square-rigger to go whaling under American registry, on the eve of sailing from New Bedford in August 1924. Outward bound the next day, the Wanderer went aground in a storm, a total wreck.
