New Bedford Whaling Museum

The Research Library is the academic studies and research division of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Located at 791 Purchase Street, three blocks from the Museum, the Institute houses the combined research libraries of the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the former Kendall Whaling Museum. Together the two collections comprise the foremost whaling library in the world, featuring approximately 25,000 volumes spanning six centuries, an unparalleled collection of 2,300 logbooks and journals, and more than 100,000 documents pertaining to the American and international whaling industries. It also houses the Melville Society Archive.

Resources include:
approximately 25,000 printed titles in more than a dozen languages that span six centuries;
2,300 manuscript logbooks and journals of whaling voyages;
30,000 historic photographs;
the archives of the New Bedford Port Society; and
more than 100,000 manuscript pieces and other documents pertaining to the American and international whaling industries.
