Capelinhos: Azorean Immigration to America
With Tony Goulart
In just a little more than two decades, starting in 1959, almost one hundred thousand Azoreans left their homes for North America. As a consequence, the Azores lost almost one third of its population, the majority of which were between the ages of 18 and 40 years old. This extraordinary exodus and its implications on the social and economic future of the Azores and of the Portuguese communities in North America is the main subject of Capelinhos: Azorean Immigration to America.
In a Herculean effort of over one hundred researchers, scholars, translators, and editors, under the coordination of Tony Goulart, this publication is a comprehensive historic and sociologic analysis of the last fifty years of emigration from the Azores not only as the result of the Capelinhos, but also the largest wave of emigration in the history of the Azores. Portuguese Heritage Publications also published a Portuguese translation of the book. Co-sponsored by the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society. Free

The Lost Fleet with Marc Songini
It's the mid-19th century and the American whaling fleet, the wonder and envy of the maritime nations of the world, is struck by one hammer blow after another. Yankee whalers are contending with icebergs, storms, rogue whales, sharks, hostile natives, and disease. Many whalers give up the life–but some carry on. One such man is a tall captain from Wethersfield, Connecticut, Thomas William Williams who not only goes out on voyage after voyage, but even takes on board his wife, Eliza, and his infant son and daughter. The Lost Fleet's thrilling narrative recounts Williams' remarkable career. Songini is a Boston-area journalist whose work has appeared in the Boston Book Review, the Boston Herald, and the Boston Globe. The Lost Fleet is his fourth book, and third book on New England history. He has lived in the greater Boston area for most of his life. Co-sponsored by the Descendants of Whaling Masters. Free
