Scrimshaw Collectors' Weekend

The New Bedford Whaling Museum is the scrimshaw capital of the world, and the annual Collectors' Weekend is the world's only forum dedicated to this indigenous shipboard art of whalemen. Founded in 1989, this event attracts enthusiasts from four continents, all gathering to share the enjoyment of collecting and researching this beautiful artwork. Needlework and the Sea Symposium
Offered in conjunction with the exhibition Needle/Work: Art, Craft, and Industry in a Port City
Sponsored by the Coby Foundation

Five student scholarships are available to cover the lecture schedule and receptions, housing, and travel expenses, to a maximum of $1000 per scholarship. Scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students in recognized programs relating to textile history, maritime history, and American studies. Applicants should send a letter (450 word maximum) explaining how attendance at the symposium will help in their education and career paths, and include a brief explanation of financial need. A coversheet with the application letter should include a photocopy of the applicant's current student ID, and contact information including an email address and a telephone number. Applications are due by March 31, 2008; scholarship recipients will be notified by April 30, 2008.
